Air-pulse toys explained: how they work

Air-pulse toys, also called suction or clitoral stimulators, have become one of the most popular sex toys of the last ten years. They feel very different from a normal vibrator. Here is how they work, who they suit, and how to get the most from one.

How they work

Instead of buzzing against the skin, an air-pulse toy has a small soft opening that sits over the clitoris. Inside, a membrane moves back and forth and creates rhythmic waves of air pressure. The effect is a gentle sucking, pulsing sensation that stimulates the clitoris without touching it directly.

Why people love them

  • No numbnessBecause nothing rubs or buzzes on the skin, many people find they can enjoy it for longer.
  • FastLots of users say they climax more quickly than with any other toy.
  • Gentle on sensitive bodiesIf direct vibration feels too much, this is often the answer.

Who they suit (and who they may not)

They are a great first toy for anyone with a clitoris, and a favourite for people who find vibration too intense. They are not designed for penetration, so if you want something inside too, look at a model with an insertable part or pair it with a G-spot vibrator. Not sure which kind suits you? See our first vibrator guide.

Which one to choose

Toy Why pick it Price
Loving Joy suction vibrator The low-cost way to find out if you like the feeling £19.99
Svakom Klitty Suction plus a licking tip £69.99
LELO Sona 2 Cruise Sonic waves that keep their strength when pressed harder £129.99
LELO Enigma Sonic outside plus a G-spot shaft inside £189.99

How to use one

  1. Put a little water-based lube around the opening. It improves the seal, which is what makes the suction work. More in our lube guide.
  2. Start on the lowest setting. These toys are often stronger than they look.
  3. Place the opening over the clitoris so it forms a light seal, then hold it still.
  4. If it feels too direct, tilt it slightly or move it a few millimetres to the side.
  5. Most are waterproof, so the bath or shower is an option.

Keeping it clean

The soft nozzle collects lube and fluids, so pull it off after use (most are removable) and wash it in warm, soapy water or with a toy cleaner. Rinse, let it dry and pop it back on. See our toy care guide for more.
