Male masturbators explained

A good stroker is nothing like the novelty tubes of the past. Today's male masturbators range from soft, textured sleeves to warming, thrusting, app-controlled devices. This guide explains the types, what the extras actually do, and how to keep one clean.

The main types

Type What it is Price guide
Stroker sleeve Soft, stretchy sleeve with texture inside Under £15
Cased stroker A sleeve inside a hard case you can grip, often with suction control £25–£40
Realistic Moulded to look and feel like the real thing £30–£60
Vibrating or warming Adds motors and sometimes heat £25–£130
Interactive Thrusts or moves by itself, often with an app £150+

Where to start

For a first try, a simple textured stroker is all you need. The Tug Life range costs under £10 and is a no-risk way to find out what you like. For something that grips more, the REV Lite has a squeezable case so you control the pressure.

What the extras do

  • Texture: ridges, nubs and chambers inside. More texture means more intensity; smooth is gentler.
  • Suction control: a cap or valve at the end. Closed gives a tighter, suction feel; open is looser.
  • Vibration: adds a buzz on top of the stroking. The Loving Joy Dixie is an affordable way to try it.
  • Heat: warms to body temperature, which makes a surprising difference. Try the Svakom Hannes Neo.
  • Hands-free: the Svakom Alex Neo 2 and the LELO F1s V3 do the work themselves and can be controlled by a partner over an app.

Lube matters

Always use a water-based lube with masturbators. Most sleeves are made of TPE or silicone, and silicone lube or oil can damage them. A generous amount makes the difference between "fine" and "great". Read more in our lube guide.

Cleaning and care

  1. Rinse it with warm water straight after use. Turn the sleeve inside out if it allows.
  2. Use a little mild soap or a toy cleaner, then rinse again.
  3. Let it dry completely before you put it away, ideally overnight with the end open.
  4. A dusting of cornflour (or a renewing powder) keeps TPE sleeves soft and stops them going sticky.

Pair it with

A cock ring can make things last longer and feel firmer, and works with most strokers. If you are curious about prostate play, our beginner's guide to anal play is a good place to start.
